I am often asked this question. The exact moment is hard to pinpoint since I feel like many tiny moments added up to the 'herbalist' big picture.
As a kid I was always curious about the natural world, naming plants and wondering how bones work. When I was 11 I had a benign cystic brain tumor followed by spinal meningitis. I was in the hospital for a month and in recovery for months afterward.
When it first happened I wondered, "why me?" Of course, at the time I could not answer this question. However, I became aware of what the medical system had (or didn't have) to offer.
In college I fell in love with learning about plants and learning how people used them. I had the opportunity to spend three weeks in Ecuador. This trip opened my eyes to how plants can be used and that people trusted and relied upon these traditional plant medicines.
From this point onward I knew I had to incorporate my love for plants and helping people at the same time. I began studying herbal medicine more and more and then graduated from the Maryland University of Integrative Health with a Master's of Science in Western Herbal Medicine.
After graduating from MUIH in 2013, I began my practice in my hometown. Then in October I purchased The Mustard Seed and changed the name to Main Street Apothecary, converting this small natural foods and supplements store into a more client-focused, holistic health clinic/retail shop.
I am currently in training to become a certified Polarity Therapy Practitioner.
